Abstract

In current phase, several industries are shifting from traditional machining process to advance machining process to high precision and accuracy. Plasma arc cutting (PAC) is an advanced machining process, broadly used in industrial applications for cutting at higher speed for hard materials. In current study, grey relation analysis (GRA) is applied for optimization of output process variables of PAC. Experimental studies are conducted on a nickel-based alloy Inconel-718 material of size 200 mm × 100 mm × 8 mm of rectangular shape using PAC. During the experiment, cutting speed, stand-off distance (SOD), current and voltage are considered as input process parameters. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to find out the significant impact of each variable. Taguchi technique with grey relational analysis is applied to optimize the response variables. The optimum level obtained of MRR is 5.4 gm/s, and value of Ra is 13.55 µm at cutting speed 1400 mm/s, SOD 0.3 mm, cutting current 105 A, and voltage 155 V.
