Abstract

The need of Joining of dissimilar materials continues expanding step by step in industry because of its popularity. Dissimilar joints depend on both specialized and generalized applications, since they can give acceptable assistance execution and sensible cost saving. In this experimentation we had taken 316L stainless steel and medium carbon steel for welding in laser source. This paper specifies the optimization of laser parameters in laser welding of dissimilar materials. Three input parameters and two response parameters of welding were taken into consideration. Scan speed, spot diameter and pulse frequency are taken as input process parameters whereas weld hardness and HAZ were considered as response parameters. The process parameters are optimized by Taguchi methodology. It was found that scan speed of 45 mm/min, pulse diameter of 0.3 mm and pulse frequency of 7 Hz bears optimal setting. The weld hardness was found to be 304.77 HV and length of HAZ to be 0.0852 mm at the optimized parameters.
