Abstract

In mechanism design, the driving speeds and geometry of each member are varied and the mechanism is re-analyzed until it meets the necessary design specifications. Common design specifications monitor link positions, velocities, accelerations, joint reaction forces, and actuator power requirements. Each trial design requires an analysis whereupon the results are inspected to determine if the re-design is adequate. In the present work, this iterative design process is automated. Symbolic computation is used to generate the analysis and sensitivity analysis FORTRAN source code. The final software package is able to optimize a general multi-body system, hence it differs from the methods that generate source code on-the-fly. [1-4] The software is used to design a wheel loader bucket to maximize load capacity for a given material load cycle.
