Abstract

In order to increase the removal efficiencies and the rates of ozone utilization in ozone contact columns, mass transfer of ozone to water with and without chemical reaction was investigated both in pilot plant bubble columns and in a Rushton type laboratory stirred reactor supplied with a variable turbine agitator. A comparison was made for different hydrodynamic conditions. The proposed mathematical models made it possible to simulate the mass transfer behavior of semi-industrial equipment by a laboratory apparatus. An engineering approach was developed for determination of the contactors mass transfer characteristics, in order to optimize the performance of a full scale water treatment plant.
