Abstract

We have used a combination of ultrasound processor and 3-roll shear mixer to disperse 0.2–0.4wt.% functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-NH2) in SC-15 epoxy with and without acetone media. Epoxy and e-glass/epoxy composites were prepared with this modified resin. In addition, control composites without MWCNT were also prepared for baseline comparison. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), rheology, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and flexure tests were conducted. Effective dispersion of MWCNTs achieved through solvent media, and the enhanced interfacial interaction between epoxy and amine functional groups of MWCNTs lead to optimum increase in DMTA and flexural properties of composites. Micrographic analyses revealed bridging of MWCNTs with epoxy and rougher fracture surfaces in epoxy composites. Also, a better interfacial bonding was observed in MWCNT incorporated e-glass/epoxy samples over control samples.
