Abstract

As fossil fuels are depleting fast, there is an urgent need to search for alternative fuels. Several experimental studies were conducted on the extraction of oil, trans-esterification and Engine testing on biodiesels by several researchers since the past few years. The Kusum seed oil is one such promising source of oil, and it is a non-edible vegetable oil. However, it was found that very few studies have been conducted so far on this oil. The present work is on the extraction of oil from Kusum seeds by using n-hexane as a solvent in Soxhlet extractor through the chemical extraction process. The major influencing input parameters that affect the yield of KSO are particle size, reaction time, reaction temperature, the volume of extractant and number of cycles. An experimental array L9 was selected for the design of experiments (DOE) with four parameters and three levels and it analyzes using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The oil yield was in between 34% and 39% with the optimal yield of 38.85% for the 6th experimental set.
