Abstract

The optimization of dynamic-pressure-measurement systems involving several input tubes connected in parallel to a common manifold or “pneumatic averager” is considered. Using an existing theoretical model, it is shown that improved frequency response characteristics are possible using restrictors located close to the pressure transducer. Manifold systems can be designed to give a better frequency response than single tube systems of the same overall length by “boosting” the amplitude response in the frequency range where the single tube response falls off. The response characteristics of some practical manifold systems developed at CSIRO are also shown. An Appendix considers the errors involved in approximating a continuous average fluctuating load on a panel, by the average of discrete fluctuating point pressures.
