Abstract

This article deals with a successful approach to computer optimization of brass wind instruments. The fundamental physical and acoustical relationships, the numerical calculation of transmission characteristics and how those are related to musical performance quantities is described. Several different optimization methods are compared. An optimization program which can be used by instrument makers to improve existing instruments or to design new ones according to a certain performance specification is presented. Computer optimization as a means to solve the “inverse problem” is proposed. Successful bore reconstruction of a “virtual” trumpet proves the feasibility of this concept. A reconstruction of a simple structure from real measurements is promising, and makes clear that accurate impedance measurements and loss models are required.
