Abstract

An algorithm allowing one to design a minimum-weight cross section of a layered composite shell with a specified contour geometry and given applied loads is proposed. The cross section has a closed contour symmetric with respect to the vertical axis and is divided into four parts-panels (two side panels and the upper and lower ones). The stacking sequences, the reinforcement angles of layers, and the thickness of different panels are distinct. To refine the solutions obtained by using a rough search method, a new genetic algorithm permitting one to find a number of equivalent optimum and close-to-optimum solutions in a short period of time is suggested. A formalization or coding scheme of solution of the problem is developed in the form of a specific structured vector.
