Abstract

In most geographical areas and cultures, oral immunisation is more readily accepted than vaccines that require injection. Moreover, the WHO Global Programme for Vaccines and Immunization (GPV) recently “declared war” on unsafe injections with unsterile needles and syringes, which in developing countries inadvertently transmit HIV, HBV, and HCV from one infant to another. Ultimately, in an optimistic view for the future, the WHO and the Children's Vaccine Initiative envision multivalent, single-dose vaccines to prevent several infectious diseases. These vaccines will be given to young infants via mucosal surfaces (ie, orally or intranasally). A commitment to foster basic and clinical research on vaccination via mucosal surfaces was made by the GPV and the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at a meeting that the two organisations held in February to assess progress with mucosal vaccines.
