Abstract

This is the first tutorial of a three-part series. The series discusses modern optimisation techniques applicable to power system problems and, by considering relevant examples, will explain some of the concepts, issues and terminology in this field. This first part gives an introduction to mathematical programming based methods including linear programming, quadratic programming, nonlinear programming, integer programming, mixed-integer programming, dynamic programming, and Lagrangian decomposition techniques. Practical issues of applying these methods to power systems are discussed.
