Abstract

A procedure is developed to determine the optimal testing frequency for 5/8-inch meters. The objective is to minimize the cost to the utility, including the cost of the meter testing program itself and the cost (revenue loss) of the water not registered due to meter inaccuracy. Water losses due to both working, but inaccurate, meters and failed meters are accounted for. The rate of decline of meter accuracy with age was found to be the most significant influence on the optimal testing frequency.
