Abstract

The oxidized mesoporous carbons obtained by hard or soft-template methods have been used for removal of heavy metal ions – Ni2+and Co2+ from the liquid phase. The materials were functionalized with 0.5 and 5 M solutions of nitric(V) acid. The use of two different temperatures of oxidation 70 °C and 100 °C, permitted achieving functionalization in two different degrees and examination of the effect of temperature on the ordering of carbon material structure. Functionalization of mesoporous carbon materials with HNO3 brought a decrease in the surface area, pore volume and area of micropores, irrespective of temperature and method of synthesis. However, it also resulted in a significant increase in the number of oxygen functional groups, especially on the surface of carbons oxidized at 100 °C, as proved by FT-IR data and Boehm titration. The oxidized mesoporous carbon materials show high sorption capacities towards Ni2+and Co2+ ions. Adsorption of metal ions is endothermic and spontaneous. The examination of adsorption isotherm revealed that the sorption fitted well the Langmuir isotherm model.
