Abstract

High frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) systems operate in heavily congested high frequency (HF) band. It is very difficult to find continuous clear channels for the wide-band HFSWR systems. Both the conventional frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) and the frequency modulated interrupted continuous wave (FMICW) are not able to solve the problem. The sparse waveform design can mitigate the interferences influence by discontinuous spectra waveforms; however, it gives rise to high range side lobes, which can't be suppressed by traditional spectral weighting. In this paper, we investigate a genetic algorithms (GAs) based sparse waveform optimization approach for HFSWR systems. Simulation results show an optimal transmitting sparse waveform solution.
