Abstract

The optimal left ventricular ejection pattern which minimizes the total power required for a given level of cardiac output is derived. Theoretical predictions were based on a three element model of left ventricular load. The trajectory of the optimal aortic root flow pulse was found to be highly sensitive to changes in cardiac output and vascular parameter values. Results are consistent with physiological observations except for the initial portion of systole.
