Abstract

Optimal quantum measurements in optical interferometry yield a 1/n scaling of phase uncertainty Δo, where n is the number of photons in the interferometer, for both passive (linear) and active (nonlinear) interferometers. The phase uncertainty is independent of applied phase shift for the optimal measurement scheme, and we identify the coefficient of proportionality in each case.
