Abstract

Wind Turbines (WTs) make the traditional distribution networks act as active distribution networks and change the fault currents behavior and protection system operation. The fault current contribution of WTs depends on the type of WTs generators. This paper shows the impacts of WTs on Over Current Relays (OCRs) operation and proposes a new OCR with voltage dependent curve to tackle protection problems. The proposed relay changes its settings based on the voltage measured at the location of the relay. The capability of the relay is tested on two networks, including different types of WTs by Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm. Two distribution networks with different types of WTs are modeled and simulated in MATLAB\Simulink.
