Abstract

Optimal power management is essential in the Off-Grid Solar Photovoltaic System (OSPVS) for the best utilization of available resources. Generally, this kind of system contains an energy storage device along with the photovoltaic (PV) array. In this paper, a simple topology is proposed for attaining optimal power management while simultaneously ensuring maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and load voltage regulation. The power management scheme aims at controlling the load voltage in order to indirectly control the power flow. Multi-loop control strategy is implemented to operate in voltage control mode using proportional integral (PI) controllers for load voltage regulation. Tuning of PI controllers is done using the heuristic optimization and it ensures optimality in power flow. The different possible modes of power flow among the PV array, battery and the load have been presented. The performance of the proposed topology and control scheme has been verified by MATLAB simulation for the dynamic conditions.
