Abstract

This paper presents a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm to obtain optimal power operation of a small wind turbine (SWT) connected to a grid-connected DC Microgrid. The MPPT algorithm vary the duty cycle of a boost converter according to the change in the DC link power and in the DC link voltage to obtain maximum power output at all wind speeds. The proposed MPPT algorithm was tested using simulations with a SWT system modelled in Matlab/Simulink. The modelled system consisted of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) driven by a SWT which was interfaced to the DC microgrid through a rectification stage and boost converter. The MPPT algorithm and the Boost converter are explained in detail. Simulation of the system operating under varying wind conditions is presented, showing the performance of the proposed MPPT algorithm.
