Abstract

A two-point boundary value problem for the optimal control of linear systems with a quadratic performance index is formulated and solved using the finite element method strategy. It is shown that the equations representing the optimality conditions for control are analogous to the corresponding problem of beams on an elastic foundation. A simple problem of optimal control is solved numerically using the standard beam element to illustrate the analogy.
