Abstract
For an optical soliton communication system with lumped amplifiers, a simple analytical expression is proposed for the optimal fiber dispersion which yields minimum bit error rate. The maximum rate-distance product of the system limited by the energy fluctuation and the timing jitter resulting from the accumulated ASE noise of the amplifiers is given.
