Abstract

Coordination of directional overcurrent relays is most often made based on manual procedures. However, due to its complexity and time-consuming, these procedures have been formulated as an optimization problem. The aim of this paper is to present a directional Bat Algorithm (dBA) as a potential algorithm for optimal coordination of directional overcurrent relays. The dBA performance was compared to others metaheuristic algorithms such as Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Bat Algorithm (BA) when applied to a nine-bus benchmark test system. The obtained results showed that dBA overcame GA, PSO and BA with less total operating time and faster convergence with similar computational effort.
