Abstract

Optimal designs of the RSSR crank-rocker mechanism for various combinations of axis angle, oscillation angle and time ratio (quick-return ratio) are presented. The optimization is on the basis of maximizing the minimum transmission angle in the motion cycle. An appropriate set of conventions and consideration of isometric design alternatives limit the field of search and the extent of ready-made design information. Generic constraints like link length ratio are considered. Performance checks on gross mobility, oscillation between prescribed positions and in the prescribed direction are included. A series of near-optimal designs that perform almost as well as the optimal one are included to enable the designer to satisfy specialized constraints. Information on designs with unit time ratio and on designs providing the largest possible oscillation angles is presented in the companion Part II.
