Abstract

The optimal design of rigid-plastic beams with piecewise constant thickness under impulsive or dynamic pressure loading is considered. Such dimensions of the structure for which the beam of constant volume attains a minimum of local or mean residual deflection are sought. The equations of motion are integrated (i) exactly and (ii) approximately by making use of the method of mode form solutions. The method of solution is applied also to reinforced beams.
