Abstract

Low frequency oscillations affect the dynamic stability of the power system adversely. Power system stabilizers (PSS) helps to damp out such low frequency oscillations and thereby increases stability. Conventional PSS helps to mitigate these oscillations to an extent. PSS tuned using evolutionary algorithms produce better results compared to the conventional PSS. In this paper, PSS is tuned using particle swarm optimization algorithm and firefly algorithm for a multi-machine system with and without renewable energy penetration. Kundur two area system is used for testing purpose. Test system is tested with and without PSS under faulty and faultless conditions with and without wind penetration and results are compared. Simulations are done using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Simulation results with both the algorithms were compared and it shows that the system with PSS tuned using PSO produce better results compared to the one tuned using Firefly algorithm.
