Abstract

An optimal design of an unstayed polemast on a naval ship under wind and sea loads is considered in this paper with constraints on buckling strength, yielding strength, and deflection. This design problem has been formulated as a non-linear constrained minimization problem, having been solved through using an interior penalty function method. The results of an optimal design from one actual ship have been presented, with its design having been seen to be more economical as put in comparison with the prototype design.
