Abstract

A simple spring-mass model is developed for closure bolting systems, including the effects of bolt prestress. An analytical solution is developed for the case of an initially peaked, exponentially decaying internal pressure pulse acting on the closure. The dependence of peak bolt stresses and deflections on bolt prestress level is investigated and an optimal prestress that minimizes peak bolt stress is found in certain cases. The effects of closure bending response and the resulting bending stresses induced in bolts are not considered in the simple model. Vulnerability curves are developed for bolted closure systems to provide rapid evaluation of the dynamic capacity of designs for a range of bolt prestress.
