Abstract

Different angular resolution of radar images can be achieved using various acquisition modes of synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Modern onboard phased arrays support operation in different polarization, with a number of antenna beams and can perform electronic scanning. Assuming illumination of the whole underlying surface under the aircraft the optimal SAR acquisition mode and spatio-temporal signal processing algorithm are developed and investigated. All well-known modes (StripMap, ScanSAR, SpotLight, Multi-look etc.) and algorithms can be derived from the optimal taking into account simplified problem statement. Synthesis is performed using modern theory of radio engineering systems statistical optimization.
