Abstract

The European study of a heavy-ion driven ignition facility (HIDIF) makes use of a multi-ion species acceleration and a bunch telescoping from the exit of the compressor linacs to the target. Based on the requirements of the octopus target a concept for an appropriate periodic final transport and focusing system has been worked out. Special effort was put into the investigation of the systematics of image aberrations in the final focusing system. The correlation between the shape of the envelope function in the focusing system and the image aberrations has been investigated. This is of major interest since the image aberrations determine the intensity profile in the focal plane and as a consequence the percentage of particles impinging on the converter surface.
