Abstract

An optics layer protection method for the Gigabit-Ethernet system is proposed. It monitors optical signal quality by comparing each input bit with a calibrated window, and switches to a stand-by fibre when a working fibre faces a quality degradation. This scheme can be applied to WDM systems that carry any type of binary optical signals with arbitrary bit rates.
