Abstract

Abstract MgS:Ce,Sm has been investigated for optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) characteristics with a view to application in radiation dosimetry. Two dominant glow peaks, around 346 and 449K are observed in this material. The latter peak is suitable for dosimetry. This peak can be optically stimulated under 1317 nm irradiation from a InGaAsP diode laser subsequent to UV or ? ray dose. Optically stimulated luminescence follows the law IOSL=Iot-x, where x is approximately unity. Gamma ray dose relative to total light output of OSL exhibits a linear relationship between 1 and 10 Gy (100-1000 rad). Various observations suggest that the traps empty through the tunnelling of the carriers to Ce3+ recombination centres under optical stimulation.
