Abstract

All known submillimetre-wave laser lines in 1,1-difluoroethylene CH2CF2, and most lines in deuterated methyl chloride CD3Cl, have been assigned using results from microwave and laser Stark spectroscopy. The band origin, and DJ for the nu 5 vibration in CD337Cl have been improved. A comparison of the CW properties of open resonator and circular waveguide cavities with particular reference to CH2CF2, has been made. The circular waveguide is consistently better, apart from mode purity. Properties of rectangular waveguide resonators and transmission characteristics of Q- and K-band microwave components have also been studied. New lines have been found in CD3Cl (792 mu m), CD3OD (869 mu m) and 13CD3I (690, 806 mu m). The effects of low-molecular- weight alkanes and cavity temperature, on the performance of various submillimetre gas media have been investigated.
