Abstract

The bifurcation behavior in laser direct-write deposition of palladium features from palladium acetate films on quartz substrates is examined. Experiments using a scanning laser slit and calculations using a corresponding one-dimensional model indicate that nonlinear changes in the optical properties of the film during decomposition can lead to both steady state multiplicity and dynamic instabilities. The experimental results also indicate that the formation of a molten zone contributes to the optical changes that lead to periodic behavior.
