Abstract

Laser crystals are important gain media for solid state lasers. Optical waveguides are basic components in integrated photonics. By using energetic ion beam irradiation techniques, optical guiding structures can be produced in laser crystals, and miniaturized waveguide lasers can be realized. In this paper, the fundamentals and methods for laser crystal waveguide fabrication by using energetic ion beams are reviewed. The influence on the micro-fluorescence properties in the waveguide regions induced by the ion beams is overviewed. The latest progress on the crystalline waveguide lasers is introduced. The prospect on the ion beam irradiated optical waveguides in laser crystals is presented.
