Abstract

Optical transition radiation (OTR) has been used to determine characteristics of an electron beam [1,2]. Divergence, energy, position, beam profile and intensity are some of the properties of an electron beam which have been quantitatively determined by comparing measurements and calculations of optical transition radiation patterns. OTR can also be used as an on-line, real time diagnostic for an FEL system. The existing optics of free electron laser systems can be easily exploited to optimize properties of an e-beam within the FEL. Measurements and resultants of an experiment done at the NBS L-band linac to show this capability will be presented.
