Abstract

Abstract— Polymer‐stabilized liquid crystals form a class of unique materials in advanced flat‐panel‐display technology. We have synthesized azo‐containing diacrylate monomers and have used their dichroic nature to study the anisotropic nature of the polymer network formed upon photopolymerization in a nematic solvent in 5‐ and 10‐μm cells. The effects of monomer structure, concentration, and UV dose on the order parameter have been studied. While order parameter does not appear to be dependent upon the intensity of the UV light used in the polymerization, SEM photos and electro‐optic studies of the cells indicate a dependence of the network morphology and cell response on UV lamp intensity.
