Abstract

The optical absorption and photoluminescence spectra of the PbI2:Fe, PbI2:Ni, and PbI2:Mn single crystals grown from the vapour phase are studied. The investigated crystals reveal a fundamental absorption edge at 510–530 nm. The PbI2:Fe and PbI2:Mn crystals also show ligand-to-metal charge transfer bands in the UV–violet range. Charge transfer transitions are also observed in the luminescence spectra of the PbI2:Fe crystal. The PbI2:Ni and PbI2:Mn crystals show an intrinsic luminescence band at 530–540 nm. The PbI2:Mn crystal also exhibits a weakly-resolved emission band near 620 nm assigned to Mn2+ ions. The corresponding excitation spectrum shows several bands ascribed to the 3d – 3d transitions of Mn2+ ions. Analysis of the crystal field splitting for Mn2+ ions in the PbI2:Mn crystal is carried out as well as the Racah parameters (B, C) and crystal field strength (Dq) are calculated. The Tanabe–Sugano diagram for Mn2+ ions in the PbI2:Mn crystal is built and discussed.
