Abstract

To make a viable magneto-optic memory system a suitable scanning device is required. A mechano-optical scanner is discussed which is capable not only of digital laser beam recording onto magnetic films deposited onto a tape substrate, but also of wideband magneto-optic detection by means of the longitudinal Kerr effect. A signal-to-noise ratio in excess of 30 dB is demonstrated for a 1-MHz band-width with a packing density (including guardband) of 7 megabits/in2.
