Abstract

Different concentrations of Yb3+ -doped Na2O-B2O3-SiO2-Al2O3-ZnO-BaO (NBSAZB) glasses were prepared by melt quenching technique. Glassy nature of the studied glasses was identified using X-ray diffraction measurements. The effect of concentration of Yb3+ ions on absorption and emission spectra were discussed. Stark splitting of the 2F7/2 ground and 2F5/2 upper energy levels was also discussed. Both Fuchtbauer-Ladenburg (F-L) method and Mc Cumber (MC) theory were applied to evaluate the emission cross-sections. For NBSAZBYb10 glass, the emission cross-sections are 4.86×1020cm2 (F-L method) and 3.88×10–20cm2 (MC theory). The NBSAZBYb10 glass has potentiality as ~975nm solid-state IR laser.
