Abstract

Abstract The fluorescence lifetimes of 3 H 4 , 1 G 4 , 1 D 2 , 1 I 6 multiplets of Tm 3+ were measured by direct excitation and time-resolved fluorescence detection in fluorozirconate glass. The upconversion signal around 800 nm was observed when the sample was irradiated by 1203 nm laser light, which is resonant with the 3 H 5 state. The mechanism of upconverted luminescence was investigated by means of the decay profile and the intensity dependence of upconverted luminescence. Fluorescence spectra by UV laser are also presented for Tm 3+ ions.
