Abstract

The absorption and emission spectra of Sm2+-doped BaFI have been measured. At room temperature and above, a broad f-d emission appears in addition to the sharp f-f emissions. Low temperature absorption spectra reveal Fano resonances involving the 5D3 level. The crystal field parameters of Sm2+ in BaFI are compared with those of Sm2+ in other matlockite (MFX with M = Ca, Sr, Ba, X = Cl, Br) crystals.
