Abstract

A series of glasses in the (PbO) x -P 2O 5) 1- x system were prepared by a single-step process from PbO and NH 4H 2PO 4. The optical absorption spectra of these glasses in the ultra-violet region have been recorded. The fundamental absorption edge for all the glasses were analysed in terms of available theories. The position of the absorption edge and hence the optical band gap were found to depend on the glass composition. The absorption edge is attributed to indirect transitions.
