Abstract

Absorption data on anodized AL 2O 3, films are presented for incident photon energies from 5 to 18 eV. Transmittance and reflectance data on corundum (single crystal Al 2O 3) are presented and analyzed to yield the optical constants, dielectric constants, and energy-loss functions over the energy range 8 to 28·5 eV. For the corundum, a Kramers-Kronig method of analysis is used which does not require extrapolation of the reflectance to energies above the limit of the experimental data. A discussion of errors is given. Interpretation of the data is in terms of excitons, interband transitions, and collective oscillations, with a comparison of the results for the anodized films and the single crystal Al 2O 3. Sum rules are discussed and used in explaining the closeness in energy of the maximum in the loss function- Im(ϵ) -1 and the calculated free electron plasma energy.
