Abstract

Abstract We have measured the Doppler broadening in H β due to the Coulomb repulsion energy in the break-up of fast hydrogenic molecular ions passing through thin carbon foils. We observe asymmetries in the Doppler profile from the polarization “wake” in the solid produced by the heavy component of the molecular ion.
