Abstract

A condition for realization of an optical magnetic mirror at the interface between the vacuum and the medium consisting of electric dipoles (or electric and magnetic dipoles) is obtained. This condition in definite frequency ranges can be satisfied not only for metamaterials, as is commonly believed, but also for ordinary media. The possibility is shown of realizing the magnetic mirror upon reflection from the medium with a negative refractive indexas well as from the media comprising linear electric quadrupoles.
