Abstract

The radioactive cerium nuclide 144Ce (half life T 1 2 = 284 d) has been separated chemically from fission products of uranium. The isotope shifts in the Ce I lines λλ = 4632 Å, 4846 Å, 5230 Å, 5291 Å, 5297 Å have been measured with the aid of a pressure-scanned Fabry-Perot interferometer. In all these lines the isotope shift Δσ IS ( 144Ce- 142Ce) was found to be about 85% of Δσ IS ( 144Ce- 142Ce) . An interpretation in terms of nuclear radii and nuclear deformations is given.
