Abstract

Multiple stages of free space optical interconnection networks using S-SEED based 2-modules and 2 × 1 switching nodes have been demonstrated using the crossover interconnection network between nodes.1,2 We propose an improved implementation of these networks. The interconnections between stages are performed by computer-generated holograms which split each node output into three equal amplitude signals that are routed to the nodes in the next stage. By modifying each S-SEED in the array to block one of its three inputs, these holograms perform a banyan interconnection between nodes. The nodes in the network are 2-modules.1 The routing of information through the network is controlled by the electrical bias on the S-SEED 2-modules, eliminating the need for a spatial light modulator to control the routing through the network.1 The network architecture, device design, and system operation are described.
