Abstract

The most important requirements of an optical fibre system designed for delivering the laser radiation up to the biological tissue, are reviewed in view of applications to the laser angioplasty and laser treatment of tumours. Coupling to the source and fibre-fibre connection problems, and beam shaping from fibre tips are discussed in details. Additional fibre components for energy and location monitoring are also suggested to improve the performances of the fibre delivery system.
