Abstract

Requirements for optical fiber cables and splices differ depending on the area of application within the telecommunication network. This paper reviews optical fiber properties along with cable and splice designs, primarily for interoffice trunk applications, and gives Bell System results for this major area of optical fiber technology. These extremely favorable results indicate that optical fibers will play a major role in all segments of the telecommunication network: long-haul, trunk, and distribution.
