Abstract

Organic nonlinear crystal 4-dimethylamino-N-metyl-4-stilbazolium tosylate (DAST) was machined ino the surface roughness of 0.76 nm rms for a high frequency modulator by an ultra-precision diamond turning lathe under special machining conditions, though the crystal is unable to be polished into an optical surface because of its softness, brittleness and hygroscopicity. The quality of machined surface was proved by the optical modulation response from 10 MHz to 20 GHz after making EO modulators.
